• Farfalle pasta w/ low-fat béchamel sauce, cherry tomatoes, and fresh herbs
• Mixed greens salad w/ fresh mozzarella and lemon vinaigrette
• Spiced apple tart w/ nut cream filling (vegan)
After learning the origin of “farfalle” or bow-tie pasta (dates back to the 1500s, originally from Lombardia and Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy) we dove into mad action without a second to lose….class was cut 20 minutes short by an assembly.

Raw Foods Diet

Filed under: raw vegan — health @ 7:25 am

Now is the time to think about your weight and health. Is a raw food diet right for you? Well if you want to keep the weight off and remain healthy then it just could be.
Many believe that a raw vegan diet is the natural diet for humans. It seems like people on raw food diets can eat almost as much as they want and still maintain a healthy weight.
The theory is that before the caveman discovered how to harness fire, they had to eat all of their food raw. Once they begin using fire they slowly incorporated cooked foods into their diet.

Restaurant review: Cru

Filed under: raw vegan — health @ 9:22 pm

Being the open-minded girl I am, I gave
raw food
another try. This time, I stopped by
Cru
, a raw vegan restaurant formerly called Jade Cafe, in Silverlake.
Now more raw-wary, I got a dish that’d make more sense as an uncooked entree. I mean, I know a “regular” bento box usually includes some cooked stuff, but Cru’s Bento Box sounded largely like a salad: fresh greens, avocado, cucumbers, carrots, bok choi, and spicy marinated mushrooms.

Organic Whaaa?

I am a waitress. It is not my proudest fact, it is not the accomplishment I want to scream from the mountaintops, it is not even something that I want to whisper to a person that I have cordially met on the street. Although this dirty little secret of mine does not exhibit a proud example of my mental abilities, at least it is a means by which I am able to pay my own rent. A feat often accomplished haphazardly by most in my age group.

Daily Update 4/28

I made another green smoothie at lunch with the greens I got at the Asian market. I am starting to like that smoothie! I have a bunch of that Nacho Cheese dip to get through so I simply put a layer in a bowl and topped with salsa and ate with a spoon. I thought about chopping up some veggies but was in a hurry today to go help up at the kids school with a bike rodeo. The dip was actually quite good served this way.

A Simple Sprouting Secret

Filed under: raw vegan — health @ 4:22 pm

Well, gardening is definitely in the air, isn’t it! When we went to town earlier this week for our bi-monthly shopping, virtually every store we went to was displaying gardening supplies of one kind or another: tools, gloves, soil, seeds, plants, you name it!
While everybody else is getting their hands and knees dirty, sadly we won’t be joining in the fun. The land on which we live is surrounded by tall trees so ‘no can do’ for an outdoor garden. (Sigh) Actually, right now I’m kinda glad I don’t have to take on gardening; not sure where I’d manage to fit that into my busy schedule these days, what with our new major project in the works and all.

Protein

Filed under: raw vegan — health @ 11:22 pm

By far, and you probably know it as well as I do, one of the most common questions you will be asked when you dabble with raw foods is: “Sounds great, but… where do you get your protein? ”
Well, I have known for years that to become protein deficient on ANY diet can take some doing (although isn’t impossible), but on a raw diet there are some interesting surprises when it comes to discovering what has a little and what has a lot.
